LASIK
LASIK – What is it?
LASIK (Laser-In-Situ Keratomileusis) is an extremely effective outpatient procedure that is suitable not only for higher prescriptions but also patients with moderate to low prescriptions. Using the excimer laser each pulse can remove 39-millionths of an inch of tissue in 12-billionths of a second. This enables surgeons to achieve remarkable accuracy while maintaining excellent control throughout the procedure.
When performing LASIK, Dr. Probst uses a microkeratome (an automated microsurgical instrument similar in design to a carpenter's plane) to create a corneal flap. The cool laser beam is then used to gently reshape the cornea to the pre-determined shape. The flap is then closed.Although no procedure is perfect, excimer laser technology allows for an unparalleled degree of precision and predictability. This makes laser vision correction, in my opinion, the best procedure available for suitable candidates.
Benefits of LASIK:
- brief recovery time
- low enhancement rate
- very low infection risk
- relatively quick procedure to complete
- very low risk of scarring
- minimal discomfort
- high degree of predictability
- preservation of the cornea (all corneal layers preserved)
- excellent ocular integrity post-treatment
- widest range of correctable prescriptions

Whos a good candidate?
If you're at least 18 years old, in good general health, and have good eye health with no diseases such as cataracts or glaucoma, laser vision correction may be a suitable procedure to reduce or eliminate glasses or contact lenses. Dr. Probst is able treat a very broad range of nearsighted, astigmatic, and farsighted patients. Good candidates also have realistic expectations.
The best way to see if Dr. Probst can help improve your vision is to contact one of the TLC Laser Eye Centers he performs surgery at and schedule a consultation. Contact TLC here

Risks and Complications
While laser vision correction has proven overwhelmingly successful in reducing dependence on glasses and contact lenses, the degree of improvement may vary among individuals. How well and how quickly your vision improves depends on how well you heal and the severity of your prescription.
Although we can't promise patients "perfect" or 20/20 vision most laser patients with mild to moderate prescriptions do achieve 20/20 vision or are within 1 to 2 lines of 20/20 vision on an eye chart. This means they no longer need glasses or contacts to drive, play sports, watch movies and TV, or participate in careers requiring excellent vision such as police and fire departments.
The results of LASIK depend on the health and stability of your prescription. A careful eye exam by your doctor prior to procedure with help evaluate the status of your eye so that you can fully informed about the risks and benefits of LASIK.
